How a Man Smells

During the summers in college, I worked at an all-girls’ camp.  My friend Molly had a Bath & Body Works air freshener hanging from the ceiling fan in her room.  It was Moonlight Path.  And she said she liked it because it smelled like a man.  Go ahead and laugh if you want – I know what she meant.

This morning, my friend Amaris sent me a message to say she was up (in America) in the middle of the night, working.  But, she said, it wasn’t that bad, because she was accompanied by the lingering smell of a man who’d been helping her earlier.

Le Male. In a man-shaped bottle and everything.

When Simon and I first started dating, he wore Jean Paul Gaultier’s Le Male.  It comes in a man-shaped bottle and everything.  He hasn’t worn it much the last few years, and now, every time I walk by a man who’s wearing it, or smell it in a department store, I am 21 and it is Autumn and I have butterflies in my stomach.

(On a negative note, I occasionally smell my ex-boyfriend’s Hugo Boss and I am 18 and it is summer and I am depressed.)

The smell of a man’s cologne is a powerful thing. For me, it is the smell of sweet memories. For Molly and Amaris, it was the smell of possibility.

How about you?  What colognes (or perfumes) make you feel, hope, remember?

Extreme Makeover: Blog Edition

The hubbub seems to have died down, and now it’s just me and you again.  And also a few new folks.  But not 20,000.  Which is good, because that was making me nervous.

This new-look Great Smitten site launched almost two months ago, and it occurred to me recently that I never gave you a proper tour, which is so rude of me because, in the South, that’s what you do when people come round.

So please, grab yourself a cup of coffee and follow me…

Header

My gorgeous header is my front door.

It was a joint effort between Jessi Connolly, who designed my overall blog, and April Knight, an illustrator from Charleston, South Carolina.

Simon was praying for me one night a few months ago when he asked God for my words to be like arrows.  Around the same time, I got an email from Jessi with some ideas for my design – and one of them was an arrow.  I went with it.

Now…if you’ll mosey on over to the sidebar with me…

Meet Faith

Self-explanatory

Social Media Buttons

Aren’t these pretty?  Email me, follow me on twitter and pinterest, become a facebook fan of Great Smitten, and subscribe via email.

I’ll compare this bit to my front porch.  It’s where we hang out.  Get to know each other a bit.  Chit-chat.  You know.

Sponsors and Affiliates

These are lovely people who have partnered with Great Smitten to get the word out about their blogs and businesses.  If you’d like more info about becoming a sponsor, you can click on the little “sponsors and affiliates” header and it’ll take you somewhere you can find that stuff out.  Or, you can just email me.  (Remember how to do that?  We covered it above.)

This is my front yard, with all my political signs stuck in the grass.

“Vote for Herb Humphries!”

“Vote No on November 5!”

Except mostly vote yes.  For these gals.

Reads

These are blogs and sites I personally read and recommend.  Simple, really.  It’s my rolodex.  Did I mention I’m giving you a tour of my house in the 80s?

Search Great Smitten

Again, self-explanatory.  I hope.  If not, email me.  Bless your heart.

Do Your Dream/How to Rope an Englishman/What My 20s Taught Me

These are recurring features, and you can find them all at the click of a button!  If you haven’t read them, you totally should.  I wrote them, and I like them.

So I guess this is kind of like that room in your house where you keep all your beauty pageant crowns and track & field trophies on display.  Not that I have any of those.

“I Read Great Smitten” Button

If you’ve got a blog and you want to tell the world that you read Great Smitten, grab the code in that little box there and paste it in a widget on your blog.  Boom.  Easy.

Follow on Facebook

This is where I like to display your picture.  You know, like a picture wall.  Because I’m into those.

Archives

This is where you can find all of my posts, ever, in chronological order.  Some of the old ones are embarrassing, but I’ve left them up for now to keep it real.  It’s kind of like how you keep your old yearbooks on your bookshelf.

I Miss This

This is a pointless list of things I miss from North Carolina.  I thought about deleting it with my new design, but I didn’t want to, so I didn’t.

It’s my house; I do what I want.

Thank you very, very much for coming on my blog tour.  I’ve got a few things in the works for the coming weeks, including the continuation of How to Rope an Englishman, a couple of new features I’ve been working on, and more inspiration to live a creative, authentic, passionate life.

It’s a pleasure to have you here, and I hope you’ll make yourself at home.

Pigs are poppin’.

There’s this thing my dad says when there’s a lot of stuff happening: “Pigs are poppin’.”

I don’t really know what it means or where it comes from, but it has somehow wiggled its way into my brain, and now every time I get busy, or it feels like there are lots of things going on around me, that’s what I think.

I’ve just tried to write a really explain-y blog post several times, only to delete and delete and delete, and decide that really, I’m too tired to talk about the big stuff.  So I’ll save it for tomorrow, and tonight I’ll leave you with the graphic image of exploding pigs.

What happened to me?

Someone landed on my blog this week by typing in the following search term:

“What happened to smitten mama?”

What happened, indeed.

We moved into our new house nearly a month ago, and our phone and internet have still not been set up.

There have been numerous phone calls to British Telecom.  There has been heavy sighing.  There has been weeping and gnashing of teeth.

No internet feels like more than just an inconvenience to me:

I’m a web editor with no web.

I’m a 3000-mile-away daughter and friend with no Skype or email.

I’m a blogger with no blog.

I’d love to say it’s all been sorted out and I’m back with a vengeance, but alas, no such luck.  The most recent update is that the BT man will come on Tuesday.  We can only hope this will be V-Day – the day I get to Skype my mom, do my online grocery shopping, and overload Great Smitten with everything I’ve been saving up for the past month:

Until then, I leave you with this photo of my beautiful son…

I’m still alive.

I know, I know…I’ve dropped off the face of the earth.

I briefly mentioned a week or two ago that we’d found a new house to rent, and we’re moving into that house this coming Saturday.  I’m so excited, but the moving preparations are taking up every free moment I have and I’m not lying when I say my free moments are few and far between.  Trying to get any packing done with a nine-month-old pulling himself up on your husband’s guitar or eating a roll of toilet paper is nigh on impossible.

That said, things should calm down once we get in over the weekend.

As for the house, I’m extremely excited about it.  It’s in the same neighborhood we live in now, which I LOVE; it has a little backyard for Adlai to play in; and I won’t have to carry Adlai and his stroller up and down the stairs every time I want to go anywhere (we currently live in an upstairs flat, and this is one of the big reasons for the move).

We’ve got so much exciting stuff going on right now in addition to the move.  I promise I’ll fill you in on it ASAP.  Thanks for bearing with me while we move.  I’ll be back to normal soon!

Telephonic Frustration

Dear Adlai,

I apologize in advance for the thousands of telephone conversations you will have in your lifetime that will go very similarly to the one I had with the doctor’s office this morning.

Receptionist: Hello, Dr. _____’s office.

Me: Hi, I’d like to make an appointment for my baby please.

Receptionist: Okay, what’s the name?

Me: Adlai Dwight.

Receptionist: Sorry?

Me: Adlai.  Dwight.

Receptionist: What’s the surname?

Me: Dwight.  D-w-i-g-h-t.

Receptionist: Oh, right, that’s the first name.  What’s the surname?

Me: No, that’s the surname.

Receptionist: Oh, okay.  What’s the first name?

Me: Adlai.

Receptionist: Adelaide?

Me (banging head on kitchen table):  Adlai.  A-d-l…

Check yes or no.

Did you know Great Smitten is on facebook?

We totally are.

I’ve been working on getting a “Like” button over on the sidebar, but I’m having a few issues with plug-ins and, well, I won’t bore you with the technical details.

BUT, in the meantime, if you want to like this here blog, like, in the metaphorical sense, all you need to do is click right here.

Thank you kindly.  And I like you too.

I’m feelin’ lucky.

In the past two months, I’ve won two contests.

First, I won a $40 gift certificate over on Ever So Lovely to founder Brandi’s shop, Creativ*Bee.

It took me a while to make a decision, but I finally picked out this little number…

THEN, last week, I found out I won a contest in a local magazine, where I got to pick out my favorite outfit from Barnyard Kids – a UK company that sells Scandinavian baby clothes.  As part of the contest, I had to explain why I chose the one I chose.

Well, this is the one I chose…

…and this is what I said…

“I love the green and blue tractor bodysuit – it reminds me of my dad riding his old tractor when I was growing up in the American South.”

So now I’m a necklace and a tractor outfit richer.

And if anybody needs some dice blown on or lottery numbers picked out, I’m your girl.

Oh good gracious.

I’ve disappeared for a few days because this has been the week from hell.

Starting last Thursday with a horrible day at work for Simon – he works with the homeless, and their lives are volatile and unpredictable.  I’ll leave it at that.

My Bruise - mildly inappropriate, but freaking amazing!

Saturday, we were looking forward to him getting off at 4pm and having a quiet night and a quiet Sunday to recover from his bad day, when I tumbled down most of the stairs up to our attic bedroom.  Two hours in the emergency room later, and we were assured the baby was fine and I was just battered and bruised.  Still, I was shaken up (and black and blue).

Sunday, Simon popped his bike tire for the second time in a week.

Monday, the car wouldn’t start.

Tuesday, a bad cold set in.

Wednesday, more of the same.

Today, though, we experienced the kindness of a stranger who was walking down our street as Simon was fiddling with the spark plugs and a can of WD-40 under our car’s hood.  A mechanic, he stopped and offered to fix the car for free because, he said, he was moved by Simon’s smile and friendly “good morning.”

So yeah…tough week.  But things are looking up.

Plus, did you see my bruise???

Big Girl, you are beautiful.

When I first told you last week I was going to be on TV, I mentioned that there “may or may not be a really embarrassing photo of me broadcast on national television.”

Turns out it wasn’t.

And I could’ve gotten away with you not seeing a relic of my awkward past – but what kind of blogger would that make me?

So, here it is: proof that I was, in fact, a giant.  And not a tall, willowy rake like the supermodel who sat beside me on the BBC Breakfast sofa.

Nope, I was a 5’10″ thirteen-year-old complete with hips, braces, and the only clothes that would fit her – her mom’s.

Please be kind.  That giant girl still lives inside of me somewhere.

Or, rather, I live inside of her.
