Football Madness

In case you’ve missed it, we are currently engaged in the largest sporting event on Earth…

The World Cup.

(That’s soccer y’all, and it actually involves countries from all over the world – unlike the “World Series” which involves, um…two.)

It only happens every four years, and every four years my husband clears his schedule for every England game, the first of which, this year, was quite an event for our little family.

Vs.

We all know how that turned out…

I have to admit I was torn, as I’m currently carrying a half-English child in my womb.  So I cheered at both goals and figured a tie was the best result for my marriage.

Simon’s not convinced.

Kickin’…as in, your breath.

The stereotypes are true:  English people love soccer.

Football, that is.

And, with the World Cup less than a month away, the country has gone Football Crazy.

Case in point: Walker’s (which, suspiciously, has the exact same logo as Lay’s) has released a line of potato chips in flavors based on the Cup’s participating countries.

I have to admit, I put my hand on my heart when I saw these.

Except, American Cheeseburger chips?  I just can’t bring myself to eat them.

Other flavors include:

Dutch Edam Cheese

Brazilian Salsa

English Roast Beef & Yorkshire Pudding

Argentinian Flame-Grilled Steak

Patriotic?  Maybe.

Appetizing?  Not at all.

a kickin’ breakfast

happy team

Saturday was a big day in my husband’s world.  That’s because he’s a huge football fan (that’s soccer to all you Americans), and this weekend marked the FA Cup Final: one of the biggest matches of the year.  This year’s contenders for Football Association champs?  Chelsea, who win a LOT, and Everton, the underdogs.

Simon had some friends over to watch the match and, because his birthday was two weeks ago, we celebrated that, too.  Most of us were pulling for Everton – who doesn’t like to see the underdogs come out on top? – and it looked good when the boys in blue scored a goal in the first minute of the match.  But alas, Chelsea came back and scored two goals, winning the title 2-1.

Ah well.  At least there was some good breakfast food – the match came on at 3pm in England, which meant it was live here in NC at 10am.

I’d also like to brag about the fact that my breakfast casserole got rave reviews, including two proclamations of “This is the best breakfast casserole I’ve ever had.”  Want the recipe?  I thought you might.

1 can flaky Grands biscuits

1 lb. sausage cooked and crumbled

1lb. bacon, cooked

8 oz. grated cheddar

8 eggs, beaten with a little milk

Spray a glass casserole dish (you know, the long ones?) with some cooking spray, then pull apart the layers of the biscuits and line the bottom and sides of the dish with them.  Now add the rest of the ingredients in layers: first the cooked sausage, then the crumbled bacon, then the cheese, and finally the eggs.  Bake that thing at 350 F for about half and hour, and bask in the glory of the Best Breakfast Casserole Ever.

My ISP S-T-I-N-K-S

I’ve been trying to upload photos to the blog, but it’s not going so well. Our internet – in general – is not going so well. We can’t get on gmail, hotmail, or myspace. But we can get on Facebook, which is good, because I am currently addicted to Scrabulous. I think I’m playing about 9 games right now. And I’m not doing too well. I think my problem is that I’m going for quantity and not quality.

Simon has just come home from the pub and is watching Match of the Day…it’s a football(Soccer) highlights show, for my American friends.
