Independence Day Barbecue

A couple of weeks ago, a few of our friends got together at our American friend Sarah’s house for a good old-fashioned Independence Day barbecue.  Except it wasn’t that old-fashioned, because there were lots of British people there.  And we barbecued Lincolnshire sausages.  But other than that…

Our friend Ali (wo)manned the grill.

Adlai got wild and wore his American flag bib as a cape.

This is Sarah.  She’s from Texas.

This is Sarah about to take part in a three-legged race with her son, Sam.  Check out that game face.

Here she is again, talking tactics.

Next up: egg races.

Check me out back there.  I am totally talking trash to Ali.

“I don’t care if you’re pregnant; I will take you down.”

Kezia and Joe are getting maaarried.

Aren’t they cute?  They’re Scottish, but we let them come anyway.

I love Adlai.

Adlai loves Sarah’s daughter, Rae.  Or, as he calls her, “Waaaay.”

Even in England, the best way to end a barbecue is with sparklers.

Some things are universal.

  3. So kind of you to let the Scots join in. I love this! I look forward to you new posts so much!

  4. Love it! Certain times of the year bring the need to celebrate familiar holidays. When I lived in New Zealand and it turned to fall (in March since the seasons are switched), I developed this primal need to make Thanksgiving dinner, which I did. When July 4 came around, I wore red, white and blue to work.

  6. Great photos. I remember when my sister was in Switzerland and shared Thanksgiving with her boyfriend’s family and friends and they kept calling the turkey the “trout” and she went through all kinds of supermarket adventures to get it imported from France and she’d brought the canned pumpkin with her :) Some traditions can’t be let go of.

  7. I have nominated you for The Lovely Blog award! Check out my blog post for the rules! :)
